Newmans Rubicon ebook

A five star story and a good example of why I read self-published books. The author created a complex tale of alliances and rivalries amidst a backdrop of intrigue, suspense, and violence, all sheathed in a fine veil of typos and grammatical errors. The story is full of colorful individuals but what stood out was the fabulous way the author developed the main character. The author weaves the main character's past experiences/memories into the story in such a way that it took me through the spectrum of feelings for and against the man. Then at the end of the story, just as I began to like and understand the main character, the author swept me back to reality by showing his instinctual ability to unleash thoughtless violence. Hair-raising at times, shocking and disturbing at others, the author's action scenes are superbly written. I could smell the spent carbide and damp earth in one scene. I could feel the terror of the moment in another. The author's ability to spell out the intensity of the moment, the split second decisions and the inevitable remorse was exceptional. I found myself looking forward to each of the action scenes. His skillful descriptions of Thailand made me feel as if I had been there, rich and beautiful in one scene. Grimy and seedy in another. The secondary account of the main character attempting to come to terms with his past simmered just under the surface of main story and then at the end became an equally important element that left me wondering how I had dismissed it, focusing only on the main storyline. It's the type of story that many popular suspense/thriller authors have ceased to write, knowing that their work will sell without the complexity. It's the type of book that makes you want to write a book of your own.
